The Car Accident Survival Guide

We all know the world can be a frustrating place. All of a sudden, we can find ourselves in situations we’ve never before encountered. In the span of seconds, our good days turn bad. So, we’re here to help. Our handy guide will help you navigate one of life’s more nerve-racking situations: the car accident.

1. Be Ready

Be ready – The key to surviving a collision with sanity intact is preparation. Keep hard copies of your current auto insurance card both in your wallet and in your glove compartment. Also, maintain your car well, paying attention to your tire conditions and to any needed repairs. Finally, always adjust your mirrors before driving.

2. Don’t Panic

Panic never helps. Turn the car off, and calm down.

3. Check for Injuries

Carefully move your limbs and search for damage. Then, turn to your passengers and make sure everyone is all right. Call 911 for those needing immediate medical attention. Otherwise, check your surroundings for debris before stepping out of the car. The collision might have made the area unsafe.

4. Snap Photos

After an accident, you need to document the details. Pull out your phone and take pictures of both your car and of any other vehicle involved. Make sure you capture each automobile from various angles and photograph the other car’s license plate and the location of both cars on the road

5. Do Some Reporting

Gather as much information as you can. You never know what details could come in handy later. Look for anyone who saw the accident and get his or her contact information and/or business cards. And, of course, exchange insurance and contact information with the other party in the collision.

You will need his or her:

  • Name
  • Telephone number
  • Address
  • Vehicle information (year, make, model, color, and serial number)
  • Insurance information (insurance company’s name, policy number, and expiration date)

6. Call the Police

You will need to file a report. Request a copy of it, and keep it with the other information you have gathered.

7. Notify Your Insurance Company

Call your insurance company or your broker. Give them all the information you’ve gathered, and they will start the filing process. A claim handler may call back later for more details.

8. Breathe

You can get through this. Hibbs Insurance Agency will make sure your claim gets processed as quickly and as easily as possible. We know you need to get on back the road.
