Pet Safety in Hot Weather: Tips for Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe

Jul 5, 2023 | Insurance, Safety, Tips

Summer is here, and the warmer weather can bring new risks for our furry friends. While we may enjoy spending time outside in the sun, our pets may not be as well-equipped to handle the heat. As a pet owner, it’s important to take steps to ensure that our pets stay safe and healthy during hot weather. Not only can hot weather be uncomfortable for pets, but it can also be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. In this article, we will provide you with pet safety tips for keeping your pets safe and cool during the summer months.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke can be a serious condition for pets. Some signs of heat stroke in pets include excessive panting, drooling, and vomiting. (A full list of symptoms can be viewed at this link.)  If you suspect your pet has heat stroke, move them to a cool place, offer water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Provide Plenty of Water and Shade

Pets need plenty of water and shade to stay cool in hot weather. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times and provide them with a shaded area to rest. You can also use cooling mats or fans to help keep pets cool.

Avoid Walking on Hot Surfaces

Hot surfaces such as asphalt and concrete can burn pets’ paws and make it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. Try to walk pets on grass or shaded areas and avoid walking during the hottest parts of the day. As a rule of thumb, if it is too hot for you to stand, it is certainly too hot for your dog’s paws. Even when the air temperature is as comfortable as 77 degrees, asphalt temperatures can reach 125 degrees. Such high temperatures can cause damage in as little 60 seconds!

Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car

Leaving pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes, can be dangerous or even deadly. Temperatures inside a parked car can quickly reach dangerous levels, even with the windows cracked. Always leave your pets at home or bring them with you if you need to run errands.

In conclusion, pet safety in hot weather is crucial for keeping our furry friends healthy and happy. By following the tips outlined in this article, you can help ensure that your pets stay safe and cool during the summer months.
